I never thought having a cookie scoop was a necessary thing. That was, until I got a set and started using them for everything but making cookies. I mean, I have used them for making cookies, it’s just not my preferred use for them.
What really drove home the favorite status of the cookie scoop was when I made potato latkes this year for Hanukkah. It was the perfect tool for the job and helped to make the latkes uniform in size, making them cook more evenly. HUZZAH!
So this post is an ode to the cookie scoop and all of my favorite things to make with them.
- Meatballs! I love using my cookie scoop for measuring out meatballs. I started using a cookie scoop when I was making buffalo turkey meatballs because I didn’t want to have to touch raw turkey more than necessary. My hands were super dry and I was tired of washing them. Turns out, the cookie scoop makes the perfect size and shaped meatballs and will forevermore be the tool I grab when making meatballs of any kind. Especially of the chicken or turkey variety.
- Making latkes! I will never NOT use a cookie scoop when making potato latkes ever again. They turned out too perfectly not to. The uniform shape and size made them a dream to cook and they packed the potato and onion mixture tightly enough so that they didn’t break apart ONCE in the pan. Which is kind of unheard of.
- Measuring out muffins! We make a lot of muffins in our house. And the kids love to help spoon in the batter. The problem with that is that they make a mess every single time. They also have a hard time getting an equal amount of batter into each well in the muffin tin. The cookie scoop takes away BOTH problems and makes it so much easier to get the batter into the pan. And it’s not just the kids that find it easier and less messy. (I do, too.) So do yourself a favor and use the cookie scoop.
- Protein bites and chickpea bites! Pretty much anything that requires being shaped into a ball will benefit from using a cookie scoop. In our house, that means protein bites and chickpea bites.
- Scooping ice cream! I would be remiss to not mention The Husband’s favorite use for our cookie scoops: scooping out ice cream! Which brings up an interesting point, since I’m not really sure what differentiates a cookie scoop from an ice cream scoop other than the variety of sizes?
Looking for your own cookie scoops but don’t know what to get? This is the set that I bought, and it came with a small (1 tbsp), medium (2 tbsp), and large (3 tbsp) scoop. And I love it.
